The University of Kent website uses two main fonts. This page describes how those fonts are used, heading and body text styles, and line widths.

Fonts

Alegreya Sans

We use Alegreya Sans for site and page titles, and headings over the top of images in feature panels.

Roboto

We use Roboto for all body text, as here. We allow bold and italic variants.

Font sizes

Body text

Our text size varies depending on the device used. Typically our body text varies between 17px and 19px.

Headings

Again, headings vary in size depending on the device. However we use fixed ratios for height and margin based on a common baseline.

h1 headings are typically about 45px high, h2 headings are typically about 25px, and h3 headings about 20px.

Line height and vertical rhythm

Line height for body text is 1.5

Our website uses h1, h2 and h3 tags only.

We use margins on headings and paragraphs which give a visually pleasing vertical rhythm.

Line width

The exact font size and number of characters per line varies according to the device someone is using.

However we attempted to make sure that lines of text typically contain no more than about 80 characters, although they can contain as few as about 40 characters on mobile devices.
